Ruby Susanne Dufour was born in August 1988 into a religious family in the small town of Norfolk, Massachusetts. The first few years of her life were uneventful, though she was prone to frequent bouts of childhood illnesses. Her parents spent many nights fretting over Ruby’s fits, both medical and emotional. According to her exhausted mother Ailene, Ruby was a crier from the start; she rarely slept through a night.

Ruby was destined for a modicum of fame before she reached her seventh birthday. After a particularly tumultuous year that saw the child’s behavior and health deteriorate, the family’s church community convinced Ruby’s parents that she had been possessed by a spirit and needed spiritual cleansing. The entirety of the religious rite was captured in a low-budget documentary that made the rounds among born-again Christian groups and can still be found on the internet, if one looks hard enough.

The veracity of “Little Ruby Dufour’s” childhood diagnosis might be suspect, but the “cure” had implications none the less. After the ritual was performed, there were marked improvements in Ruby’s health. The little girl became more measured in her interactions with others, more capable of managing her temperament. Her parents’ relief was palpable. They overlooked other factors, such as her penchant for lying. As she matured, so did Ruby’s talent as a sketch artist. She became an insatiable reader, particularly in matters of spirituality and the occult, an item her parents attributed to morbid fascination and certainly not any ill effects of her childhood condition.

The truth is that Ruby is still connected to that other plane where demons and angels exist. She uses drawings and symbols to mark people and places, providing “anchors” of sorts where entities can get a foothold in the human realm and increase their influence on our world. She is equally capable of good and evil, but Ruby is far more interested in the latter.
